What is clear was his inability to continue to work for Pinkerton because he was weak, and often bedridden, from tuberculosis contracted during World War I. Since none of his early writing has survived, however, even Hammett’s motivation to become a writer is shrouded in mystery. Ward also closely reads Hammett’s detective stories for clues. Other information about the Pinkerton years came from Hammett researcher and journalist David Fechheimer, who tracked down operatives who had known Hammett. Ward can only deduce what they might have contained from other operatives’ work. Unfortunately, finding little evidence of Hammett’s years working for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, Ward often guesses what Hammett might have felt, done, or thought. Although he speculates, for example, that “doing his scores of operative reports” honed Hammett’s ability to write pithy narratives, none of those reports are in the Pinkerton archive at the Library of Congress. Journalist and former American Heritage editor Ward ( Dark Harbor: The War for the New York Waterfront, 2011, etc.) began this lively, but ultimately slight, book with a single question: how did Hammett transform himself “from Pinkerton operative to master of the American detective story”? The many biographies of Hammett (Ward cites a few in his bibliography) failed to answer his question, so he set out on his own investigation. Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961), private eye.

When an author can take the preconceived notions of “ugly & terrifying” gargoyles and turns them into “hot & sexy, yet terrifying” gargoyles, you know you’ve got a winner! I was excited about this series way back when Jen told me she was even attempting to write a book about gargoyles, where we appropriately joked about the actual cartoon show, Gargoyles. How did it feel to revisit Discworld while narrating the City Watch audiobooks? It was one of my first jobs and I was in my early 20s at the time, playing a multitude of characters.Īnd then coming to read the books it was as though I was walking through a highly ornate tabernacle door that opens up with a very fulsome, resonant creek – then you step through to be greeted by an entire other universe, which you feel drawn to run into at full pelt. A young seer's first prophetic vision upends her life and sets her off on a desperate quest to change fate in this contemporary fantasy middle grade novel. As different as my personality is from hers, I identified more with her (or rather, her flaws) than I have with a heroine in long time. She’s the strong one, the one who is never badly hurt, the one who stands strong for those who are. Her flaws aren’t limited to impulsively doing idiotic things that could get her killed–she has deep-seated pride. Britt Bradford is the epitome of headstrong, spunky, and independent, but unlike so many other heroines who answer to that description, she feels 100% real. But to be honest, I get a little tired of them, as they rarely feel truly real. They’re smart, fun, and what many of us dream we could be like.
